How did you two meet?
We met through mutual friends. One of my girlfriends talked me into going out to the beach bars in jax beach with her one night and we met up with one of our friends at The Ritz. She told me there was someone she wanted to introduce me to then she turned around, grabbed some guy, pulled him in front of me said “Talk to Kevin” then walked away. Kevin and I started talking and we haven’t been apart since. We discovered our mutual love of Karaoke,Classic Rock music, and just about everything in the world we had in common and it was game over.
How did he propose?
We went to the MOCA downtown for their big New Years Eve Masquerade Gala with a few of our closest friends. It was my birthday and so we all wanted to get dressed up for a classy fun night. The countdown to midnight started and after the clock struck zero he kissed me, hugged me, then whispered in my ear, “Kourtney Morgan Gabik…” Then he got down on one knee and said “…will you marry me.” I was in such shock I don’t really know if I ever said yes. It was the most amazing moment! Don’t worry, it’s on video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRYlrkxveJo
How did you choose your theme? Flowers? and overall wedding design?
My main goal was for the wedding to be an experience. I didn’t want people to just come and sit down and wait around for fun to start, I wanted it to be a party, but a classy party. I was really inspired by the venue itself. Pre-decor, the Lath House wasn’t much to look at but I had a vision of a whimsical tranformation. That was the overall theme “Vintage Whimsical.” The whimsy could be seen in the fabric, lanterns, Princess Bride Cigar Bar, fun photo booth, the flowers, my dress…and the vintage was brought in with the frames, bottles, couch, colors. The glass bottle centerpieces were from my gradmother on my father’s side who passed away 2 years ago. The ceremony in the Peristlye didn’t need much. I had wanted to get married there since I was 7 and it is already so elegant. We brought is some wrought iron pieces for an alter and framed the entrance with beautiful trees.
Kevin’s favorite color is grey so that was an obvious choice for a color and my dad’s name is Koral so we went which Coral to compliment the grey. We had the groomsmen in charcoal grey suits with coral and peach striped ties and the bridesmaids in varying shades of coral dresses that were all draped chiffon. The flowers included gardenias, raunculous, zinnia, dahlia, white wax flowers, peach callas (to compliment the calla design on my dress), lavender, and eucalyptus leaves. My bouquet was wrapped in lace from my late grandmothers wedding dress on my mothers side.
We are a unique couple so we wanted a unique wedding. Even though our wedding was in New Orleans, we didn’t want it to be a total New Orleans wedding. Our guest new since getting our Save the Dates (they were CDs of our favorite songs) that they were going to be in for a good time. We had 3 different types of music. We had strings at the ceremony that played Enya for the Processional and Taio Cruz, “Dynomite” for the recessional after the first kiss. The James Andrews Band did our second line and played great New Orleans music at the reception until our entrance. They also played our first dance, Al Green “Let’s Stay Together”, the daddy-daughter dance “Butterfly Kisses”, and the groom and his mom’s “Last Date,” by Floyd Cramer. The party kept going with the native Jacksonville band, “Who Rescued Who.” They are Kevin and my favorite band and have literally been there since the beginning of our relationship. Our 3rd date was at Urban Flats when they were playing and we have been going to hear them play every chance we get ever since. We were so excited that they came to New Orleans!
What was the best part of your wedding day?
Our Second Line parade to the reception. We had champagne and second line umbrellas for the entire wedding party. It was such an exciting time!
What do you want to always remember from your wedding day?
Kevin’s smile when I got to the end of the aisle and the way it felt when he wrapped his arms around me for our first kiss
“IF I only I knew!” what is one piece of advise you would give to brides planning their wedding day?
Don’t sweat the small stuff, because in the grand scheme of things, it won’t matter. Oh, and don’t be afraid to delegate, everyone WANTS to help you.
And where are you going on your honeymoon?
7 day cruise to Costa Maya, Belize, Honduras, and Cozumel
The Extras…
Since I am a graphic designer, I designed the programs and the signs for the reception. The processional was to Enya because Enya is my dad’s favorite singer. When I started taking piano lessons, he bought me all of her song books, and now those are the only ones I have memorized. My daddy and I walked down the aisle to Watermark and it was truly a magical moment I will never forget.
I am and always will be the proudest Daddy of the Bride….
